Using a dashcam is legal across Canada, and footage from one is widely used to support accident reports and traffic complaints — though there are a couple of practical things worth keeping in mind about how and what you record.

Front and Rear Recording Is Generally Not an Issue

Recording what happens on a public road raises very few privacy concerns under Canadian law, and front and rear dashcam use is essentially unrestricted across most of the country without any special permission or disclosure needed.

Cabin Cameras and Audio Recording Need More Care

If you're using an interior-facing camera or recording audio — for rideshare driving, for example, where passengers are in the vehicle — it's worth checking passenger consent requirements and the specific rules in your province, since recording regulations around audio and interior video can differ meaningfully from one province to another.

Submitting Footage to Police

When submitting footage to support a report or complaint, hand over the original, completely unedited file rather than a clip you've trimmed yourself. It's also worth confirming directly with the officer handling your case which format they'd prefer — the original digital file, or the SD card itself.
